George L. May
George May is the founding partner of May & O'Brien, LLP. He has thirty-five years of broad legal experience, principally in general litigation. After clerking for the Minnesota Supreme Court he spent four years in the Dakota County Attorneys Office initially prosecuting misdemeanors and felonies, and later handling the County's civil litigation, condemnation matters and property tax litigation. In 1975, he joined the Doherty, Rumble & Butler law firm in St. Paul where he did a wide variety of trial work, including aviation defense, condemnation, trade secret litigation, litigation on behalf of agricultural cooperatives and other general trial work. He was a partner and shareholder in that firm until 1984 when he left to return to Hastings. He practiced with the firm then known as Hertogs, Fluegel, Sieben, Polk, Jones & Laverdiere, P.A., where he was head of business litigation, handling contract litigation, zoning disputes, condemnation work, real estate litigation, property tax litigation and some criminal defense work. In 1993 he formed his own law firm in Hastings, the forerunner of May & O'Brien, LLP. Since 1993, Mr. May has extensively litigated matters ranging from contract issues, employment matters, property disputes, discrimination, sexual harassment claims, business torts such as fraud and misrepresentation, agricultural disputes, municipal issues, federal tax litigation, criminal defense and family law. Mr. May also has maintained an extensive appellate practice.
While the focus of Mr. May's practice has been litigation, he also has significant experience in estate planning, probate, real estate transactions, business planning and municipal work.
In 1989, Mr. May was certified as a Civil Trial Specialist by the Minnesota State Bar Association. He has also held the highest Martindale-Hubbell attorney rating, AV, since 1978.
